Borrowed a friend Excursion for a couple of weeks. It was a lifted 4x4 with 37" tires and 4.56 gears. Best I could get on the freeway with it was 6 mpg.....Was a very pricey couple of weeks...

Lol, my 1965 Fargo W500 Power Wagon, 4x4 with 40" bias ply's on split rims with 4.88's with a 440 4 speed gets about 4 MPG, so you got me beat!

That is odd, my last slant 225, 3 on the tree, 3.91 was in a 71 D-100 running 275-50-15 front tires and 295-50-15 rear gave 14.5 mpg, tank after tank, year after year.
The milage would dip down a little in the winter.

You would think after 30 years Chrysler could make a truck that got better milage.

FYI I loved my old 03 Suzuki DRZ 400 street / trail bike that I bought new, it would average 73.4 mpg...But the trade off was every oil change at 3K miles you had to put a new set of tires on it.

Remember you're comparing a 100HP slant six to a 300HP (gross) 360...and they get the same mileage!

I'd say that's a fair advancement.

My 03 Intruder 800 got 45 MPG no matter how I drove it.
The 98 1400 got 38 if I babied it and 30 if I hammered it.

I rented a brand new 03 F150 crew cab 4x4 with the 5.3.

Got 17 MPG hwy towong a 4000# trailer. Thought that was pretty good.

Both of my "A" slants were good for 20 mpg highway with 2.76 rears and automatics. a 63 170 and a 67 225. Stock engines with no rebuilds.Around town and living in a hilly area 'bout 14 mpg.

get between 21 and 25 depending on my left foot, 67 4 door dart w/ 78 aspen super six, 2.25 exhaust is the only mod.

My 77 CB550 gets 45mpg...I expected better

All these stories are wonderful, yet we all know exactly what we really want and it isn't a 170, 225 or 273. What we want is a bonified high powered vehicle that can dance without compromising gas mileage in the mid to late 20's.

I'm gonna try this recipe-

74 Duster +- 3200 pounds

318 with 302 or magnum heads 9.2-9.6 CR

Comp 256 cam, air gap, 1-3/4 headers, 3" exhaust

3.73:1 B body 8.75

833 o/d manual

I bet it does great in the useable street power RPM range and still good on the highway, plus turn a decent 1/8 mile time.

My old 69 Charger 440/727 2.76 gears from Virginia to the Nationals at Columbus, down the track a couple of times, back and forth to the motel - 19 MPG round trip!. How I miss that car!

Srt8 Challengers only get 13/19hwy. 5.7 Challengers get 16/25. Hard to get blazing performance and hybrid mileage.

66valiant 225 /6 13mpg doesn't matter if in city, expressway or ac on or off. 13mpg that's it. Named him white lightening because he likes every gas station I pass by.

thats the slants I know of; crappy fuel milage that isn't any better then v8 with half the power

stick a v8 in there and then you have cheaper parts, better sound and no replacement for displacement

Try putting some of those "magic magnets" on the fuel line. It is said that they line up the fuel molecules for a better burn, LOL.
