Okay guys I just received news from my mechanic that he believes my low oil pressure situation has led to some wiped out cam bearings. However to be sure he would have to open it up and tear it down. So with that said I am going to have him rebuild my 318 and since it's open I might as well put in a cam of my choice. This is a daily driver, with power brakes, and air. Should I go with Comp Cam's 260H or 268H? Should I go with an XE series cam? Note the rest of the engine will be stock.

The 268 is a good cam for the 318, I run the HE268H in mine. Keep in mind it might be a little doggy from a standstill if you are running stock gears.

If you plan on upgrading your rear gears in the future, which you probably will once you have the cam, I would say do it.

I would consider the 268 with the 901-16 springs, a good 4v carb and headers, 3.55 suregrip and a little higher stall at some point. Also be sure to upgrade the timing chain to a true double roller.

2.76 / 2.97 The XE260H.
3.21/3.23 gears and numericaly higher? XE268H
I has a similar spec'd Crane cam in a 318 Duster capable of high 14's with 3.21 gears and a near stock sized tire. It also had headers and a 4bbl.

Thanks for your input. Actually I plan on either installing a Gear Vendor's OD or some stock Dodge OD in terms of transmission upgrades. I really didn't plan on gears since this is a daily driven street machine.

Well if your planning a gear vendor, then you could do the upgrades and still drive it daily, best of both worlds.

Would either of these work with stock components?

This is a really nice grind. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CRN-693802/ You're gonna need the matching springs at the very least whichever camshaft you choose to get the most out of it. The cam above will work fine with stock rockers and shafts.

Yes, though if your going to keep the exhaust manifolds (It seems thatway) I would look into the Comp cams line designed for exhaust manifolds. Ithas a good bit more duration on the exhaust to help the engine breath unlike all the cams listed here so far.

First example, a car with Hwy gears; http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/cam-specs/Details.aspx?csid=634&sb=2
or

And the more aggresive cam. This should be able to provide a real nice power increase. I'd use this with 3.21/3.23 MIN.! gear or higher.

Seems the performance minded contributors have neglegted to address the heart of your question, "a/c and power brakes".
I hope this post prompts them to look again.
Good luck

See that's one thing I have to think about carefully. This car is my daily that has air, and will be driven on the highway a lot. I have what was called "an RV" grind in there right now. I just thought of stepping up a bit so I could have a bit more power to ensure I defeat the occasional fart piper or performance oriented ricer.

Yes I plan on keeping the stock exhaust manifolds for sure. That first grind sounds pretty good for what I use my car for.

I agree. The second one with 211 Int. Duration shouldn't pose any issues what-so-ever.

IMO....... For what it's worth.......

The 260 comp is the way to go, the 268 will dog even with 3.55 gears, no matter what you do with timing, until compression gets over 9-1....

The 260 is the best all around 318 cam Comp makes, but if your looking for the best bang for the buck, it's just short of almost there.....

Stay away from dual energy type cams with stock 318 heads, manifolds or no, the added exhaust duration just makes the little motor less snappy from idle, to add a couple hundred RPM to the already weakening power band. (Worsens MPG too)

IF it were me, in other words, whet I always do when I have a choice in the matter, say.... The motorhome I jsut finnished a 318 for..... call ISKY, and have them grind the 262/262 with a 104 LSL, and get excellent throttle response, power to 5K, and great MPG.... And last but not least, a nice 800RPM rolling idle chop.

BTW, Rotella 30W, Zinc additive, T stat out, front studs removed from heads to bleed air, and we woofed the first lobe on that 275HEL or whattev in a 360 tuesday......... Never had any cams go flat but Comp and Edelbrock....... Wherea's the 228* solid in my 390 was started at an idle, warmed up, and then driven like normal and gee it lived.

Comp Comp Comp, to each his own, I would just check ISKY, LUNATI, and ENGLE. ISKY being the best if you want to talk to a cam guy in person about exactly what you want.

I have a Engle ep-18 cam in my car. I have j heads and headers, but the car runs great
Pulled well with stock converter and 3.55 gears. good fuel economy and great drivability.
Specs are 216 at .050 .458 lift 113 lobe seperation I set it at 109 ic
The cam pulls well to about 5500 rpm

I just installed an XE268H in my 318 two weeks ago. Stock bore, eddy RPM air gap intake, Eddy 600 cfm carb, hooker competition headers, 2800 stall, dana 60 w/ 4.10 gears. I just wanted to liven up the motor and have it sound nice. Now that it is running, it screams off the line. Mid range is so - so, but the rpm range on this cam on the low end for quick giddy up. Here is the video just after I broke in the cam. Runs great and sounds sweet!

I would argue that. Mine screams off the line. I run a 4.10 gear, but after installing the 268 the difference is night and day. Very happy. I went on the cheap and didn't even install new springs.

LJS30, if you are wondering about brakes and air, both cams will do it, the 268 will have to idle a little higher due to weaker power at an idle, but thats it......

I think the xe262 would be perfect for this engine. should work fine with your gears, converter, A/C. I think it would be great as a daily driver cam.

Are you running power brakes and air?

Power brakes yes. It is an A/C car but the compressor is long gone. I would love to get it back up and running, but while the evap core is still there, there is no compressor, drier, expansion valve or condensor. Too expensive and too much of a PIA.
