Looking for some help here.Have a few questions. Probably stupid questions but need to ask. I have a chance to pick up a '73 340 std. bore bare block. Are all the 340 blocks(68-73) the same? What are 340 blocks worth? I have two '67 273's(one 4bbl. and one 2 bbl.) complete motors. Does the 273 4bbl. and 2 bbl. use the same crank? I was told they are both forged steel. Not sure.Thinking of using one of the 273 cranks in the 340. Will the crank from the 273 motor work in the '73 340 motor? Will the 273 crank need work? Thanks in advance.

The 273 and the 340 share the same stroke, 3.31. So the 273 crank will work in the 340 block with a rebalance. Check to see if the pilot hole fit's your applaction.

All 273-318-340 are same stroke so all the cranks will interchange as a unit, meaning forged crank needs neutral or forged crank balancer, and cast crank needs cast crank balancer, which is weighted, the 273 crank is most likely forged steel and I have used several in 340's that were cast crank motors that I changed to forged, like stated in earlier post , would be advisable to check counterweight and balance, but yes they work and rumor has it that the 273 forged units were better than the 340 ones, that I dont know for sure but I never had an issue with any in my experience. as far as 340 blks other than date codes or yrs they were all the same.
