3:55 sure grip

I have a complete 8 3/4 rear end taken out of a 70 Dart 340 with a 3:55 sure grip. My Demon has a non sure grip 3:23. I would like to put the 3:55 into the Demon but do not know its condition. Can the 3rd member be inspected without taking it apart to see it it is good?

You can get a general idea by looking at it. The ring and pinion will be visible, but that's about it.

Put it in and do a burnout.

Don't forget your axle end play!

Actually, if they are both A body rears, it might be quicker to swap the whole thing. No muss, no fuss, except for maybe the brakes.

If it spins nice and smooth, gears are not blued, chipped, rusted or pitted I would just stick it in and give it a try. Use 85w140 gear oil with a bottle of the ford friction modifier.

And if your SureGrip is A TracLoc (clutch type), make sure the buttons are still in place on both sides.

Good point, setting axle end play would be all for not, or should I say trying to.
