I’m am getting ready to ramp up for my summer project. I am looking for a 360, and will be happy with 300+ HP.
Could someone give me direction on what heads, cam, intake, headers to look into? To get 300hp, will I have to tear down the motor more, and look into pistons, and other things. I’ll have to admit, I’m pretty lazy, so the less I need to do the better! Something else to keep in mind is that this is something I’d have to do on a budget for I am a poor college student. I’m just looking for some direction, and If suggested maybe just be happy with a simple 360 swap.

Thanks guys!

A running engine? Install a modern cam, like the XE268 or Lunati VooDoo 268, install HP manifolds or better yet small tube headers with decent 2.5" exhaust, set up the distributor, and tune it.
Poof 300hp.
If you need an intake and carb, grab a Performer RPM (non air gap is cheap) and stick an Edelbrock Thunder AVS 750 on it. With the cam and lifters, springs, gaskets, and doing it yourself it should be less than $1500.

A stock rebuild with an eye to performance can get 360hp without any real effort. If you had a running core, it could be done for under $4K.

That,s a good writeup useing mostly stock parts with some machine work.Great advise,I think I,ll save it for my next street/strip build.Hopefully #9.

Like moper said, cam, intake, carb, exhaust, and you'd be at 300 HP easy. Gas mileage wouldn't be too great, but you could get that with a compression increase and head porting (things you might do later). Headers might also not be a good idea because aside from the nice Doug's or TTI's, they are for the most part a pain to install and hang too low on A-bodies.

Thanks! Thats great stuff!!

One question about the heads though? If I get a cam, will it not flow correctly with the stock heads?? I like that Voo Doo cam, just cuz it sounds cool! LOL! Silly I know.
Would it be a bad idea to look for 308 heads if I can find them? I know that there are "J" "x" "W" heads and all that. I think that will be my next thread. I can't even get them straight. Or would the stock heads be fine for this application??
Thanks!!

If you can get the compression up but stay within premium gas limitations it`ll help make good hp for you without sacrificing anything else. The 68-71 340 heads would be great if you can find a set. A dual plane intake like the Edelbrock Performer is a good choice for a street intake. A good hot ignition like a MP electronic unit, a set of headers ,and a cam that`s a little hotter than the 68 340 4spd. cam should easily make 300 hp for you. The stock 68 340`s made 275 hp (conservatively), so with a little tweaking a 360 using many of the same, similar, or better parts should have no trouble making 25 more.

All the heads for LA engines with 360 sized ports are virtually identical. IMO, not worth shopping for anything. The smaller cams like the 268s are made to work with stock ports. You will need to replace the valve springs, and possibly the retainers if you have the exh valve rotators on your engine. Otherwise, it's all just bolt it all in and run it.

Pretty easy to do 300hp.

My friends got a 360 in a 71 Demon, 350hp/400tq, got 20 MPG on the highway running 60-65, 2.76 gears and a 750 double pumper. Just swapped out an 8.75 3.23 sure grip so mileage might drop a touch. Will still probably get 17-18 on the highway.
