318 - Best Bracket Engine ..... IMO

-
I don't know, but it's easier to win with a slow car.
There was guy that raced at Spokane back in the late 90's, he won more driving his old ladies caddy than he did with his 9 sec Camaro.
It was a kick watching him jamming out to rock with the AC on, round after round. lol
Not true at all. Go to any big money bracket race( no box) and most guys run 6.0’s to 6.50’s in the 1/8. Very rare to see a 7 sec or slower car. Not saying never, but rare. Rarer still to see and 8 second car

We run 1/4 mile in these parts, you guy's should try it sometimes, some of the frequent winners might become losers.
1/8 mile is just getting started in the 9-12 bracket

Gotta be a diehard slant guy to build one for speed.
I believe Mark Etheridge may still hold the record N/A slant 6 time, I'm not sure. I know he did for a while. I'll have to ask him. He wrecked the car and hasn't built it back yet. I'm not sure he's going to. The car was in the 10s if I remember right and MIGHT have gotten into the 9s. Been so long ago I cannot remember. Maybe @Charrlie_S knows.

Our track is 1/4 mile, with some races being 1/4 and some being 1/8.

But couldn't compete - or even come close to a 318 in cost for bracket racing. Getting a /6 to 7.99's will cost a ton more and won't be off the shelf parts.

Yes. I found a Facebook picture Ed Thompson posted in 2011 saying at the time the car ran 11.50, but I'm almost positive it's been a lot quicker. Here's the Facebook post and the car.

The privacy settings won't let me post it. I'll see if I can find a picture I can save.

I had really good time with my 95 Dakota slt short box regular cab. 5.2 magnum, such a consistent pick up.

Same here, I don't understand why they run the 1/8 though.
This country is sliding to 1/8 mile for a few reasons. For me, when I grew up, every town no matter how small had a "1/4 mile" place out of town. Between two road signs, or a farmers gate to a post, whatever. Then, there were "stop light wars" - which was really a 0-60 race. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY had a "1/8" marked out of town. It's why I'm a 1/4 mile guy, it related to what I did out of town.

Here's the car with an 11.75 dial in. It's been quite a bit quicker. I'm ALMOST certain he got it in the 10s. I could be wrong.

If so, I'll put my 4.56 gears in lol

That's a cool car. Even at 11.75 that is 100% impressive.
Oh yeah. The car is well known. It would haul the mail. Mark has really gotten heavily into Moto Guzzi bikes now. He's always been, but the Lancer is on the back burner. I keep trying to get him to get it back going. I wish we were local. I'd go help.

How many of those lancers did I pass up lol, I'm dumb

Why you wouldn't bracket a slant is very understandable. Why there aren't more 318's is NOT understandable. For the reasons in post 1

My buddy in highschool had a 71 valiant 318 2 bbl, boner stock. It was very surprising.
Didn't hurt that it was under 10,000 original miles

I agree, it's a dead consistent, great running engine.
Not just that, but to get a slant to run 7.99's is going to cost. And will it hold together the entire bracket points season. Or 5 seasons. It's the cost. And parts availability.
