Hello all. Just wondering what is the best camshaft for a 68 Coronet with 67 318 (Weiand 8007 Intake/Edelbrock 600 cfm carb/Summit Headers 2.5" dual exhaust stock 920 casting heads (new stock/springs guides/seals) and stock pistons. Transmission is a 904 with a 11" PTC 2200 stall low gearset and TF-2 shift kit. The rear axle is 8.75 and 2.76 gears riding on 245/60/15 tires.

Right now I assume it has a stock type camshaft. I have been thinking the K6900 might be the way to go to use the stock springs and pushrods but, I also thought about the Whiplash from Hughes but, we do drive this car a lot. What is your guys opinion? It is mostly street driven. This may be my first time changing a camshaft. Thank you in advance.

i really like this cam. i have it in my 67 valiant, 318 4bbl intake/650 Holley carb. summit headers. ported heads. works really good. a lot of my bobbies like this one too. because you don't need new springs for it. i mean if you going to change springs anyways, id go bigger but that's me

I have almost the same set up in my Dart. I went with a Comp Cam XE268H. I love the sound, and I love the power. I recommend it highly. Listen to it here. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GK0c6FUfpc8&feature=g-upl&context=G2f301f7AUAAAAAAAEAA"]My new cam sounds nice - YouTube[/ame]

I'd run the one down from Big Tommy's choice. Just due to the gear ratio. I would also run a split duration for better breathing. It's not a huge improvment, but a little one that helps.

Though I like the Whiplash's spec's better. More split on the duration and lots of lift.

The K6900 is a little small. Better suited for a stock replacement/mild upgrade and IMO, without headers.

Otherwise, nice selection of parts.

I have pretty much the same set up as magnumminded. I am running 3.91 gears. Car is a track only car. Runs 13.5. I too have been wondering which would be the best cam for my set up.

I run the same cam as bigtommy, and you DO NEED to change the valve springs with that cam. Also install a double roller timing chain, a good one not the one that comes in the cam kit.

With the gears you have it will be a little sluggish of the line, but it will run well. If you upgrade the gears to 3.55's you will see a very nice improvement, with that cam.

HEMITM;

Track only? That would be a different cam than a street cam. Since you would rev up the engine rather than drive it. Purpose built drag only car?

IF the heads are stock, the high lift can not be done. Look for a long duration cam and low lift. A split duration cam is a plus with stock or mildly ported heads.

Just a few examples of what could be installed;

Of course, your particular build and parts used may vary

No problem. PM me with details of the engine, as not to hy-jack the thread. ;)

That XE256H is a great cam with stock heads, manufacturer recommends spring change that can be done with the heads on the block. I use this cam with spring, retainer and locks changed. It idles very well with lots of low end torque and can be used with a stock converter if wanted.

...with those gears and that converter you will not be happy with the mopar .474

you don't need to change em? wow i didn't know that. thanks for the info

Thanks guys. Still thinking I may stick with a K6900 from Summit. Here is the car when it had Turbo mufflers with the K6900. Like I said the new engine has new valve springs and I'm not sure what they are just that are newer. I just imagine they are factory replacements so the K6900 maybe the K6901 maybe the limit for them. I wish I knew what they were. I don't race the car and I usually drive the car or my wife drives it. My best mpg with the tired engine is 20 mpg at 70 mph with 275/60/15 tires. I know it may be a stretch but, I'd like to see high 14s with it if I ever did run it.

Here is the K6900:

If your engine is stock or with nothing more than a 4bbl. and header bolt on, you will like the cam for repeating a stock feel with more power. You'll notice it. But not a big gain.

Those spec's are like a "Enhanced" cam, not far removed from stock duration but a big help in the lift department. This will add some nice HP numbers since it is getting into the heads best flow area. Something a stock cam doesn't go near. The extra exhaust duration is also good. This will help it breath better. The new intake charge will be cleaner and fresher as the exhaust is longer to rid the engine of the spent gasses.

You did note the RPM range of the cam right?
