Is it normal to see the crank pulley move in and out slighley while revving the motor ? I have double checked the tightness of the dampner, the 1
1/4 bolt, seems tight.

If it's only a smidgeon, then it may be ok. but if it's more than a tad, then check your thrust bearing...

I had a cheap converter that worked on the thrust bearing in a 340. that crank would move in and out about .040 (guessing).....

You should not be able to see it. End play should be in the neighbor hood of .010 or less.
Between a smidgeon and a tad, its not the end of the world yet. But it is possible that the end is coming. The T-bearing wont heal itself. Keep your eye on it. When it gets close to a tad, rip it out.

So the thrust bearing is in the front, or is it what keeps popping up in my searches as part of the transmission ?

The thrust bearing is the center bearing of the engine crankshaft.
