I have a 72 Dart with 318 that idle rough after new cam break in and 2 short test drives, first test drive I went easy on it, but the next test drive I did get on it some kicking in the passing gear up to 4000 rpm, It run fine the who time, even at the stop sign before heading home, got in the drive way, stop to back in and the idle all of sudden dropped down to 500rpm, but revs up to 2000rpm fine, I started it today after setting a day, done the same, idle is at 500rpm about will not run, but get on the gas gos up to 2500rpm it seem normal, but let off gas it dies or about dies! Oil psi cold stat was around 60psi and douse go up with rpm, When I took it for a drive with getting on it some wall driving the temp was 209 and oil was around 20psi!.. Before last test drive it was idling 900 to 1000 rpm & started real good, I do still have the break in oil in it, New Comp Cam (Edelbrock Cam kit) with Edelbrock timing chain, New Cam Bearings, rods and valve seals was put in!.. So I was wondering did I wipe out my cam all ready?.. Could it be a clogged fuel filter, because it has a little stuff in it now, probably from setting a year?.. Could it be a intake leak?.. I'm going to look at it more when I get time!

You're supposed to change the oil before you drive it. Do you have any rattling in the top end? Make sure let's pull the valve covers and check, aside from that it may just be tuning

Could be one or two teeth off on the cam timing.
Well, like I said on start up 1000rpm, it was fine took a 5 mile trip, done real good, at the stop sign before going back home, idle was not much lower. then got home, went to back in the drive way, dead drop to 500rpm about to die in gear and next day will not idle on Start up!

Hears a pic of my Eng. before first start up, thats why air filter was out of it!...What about bad head gasket, would it do that?
Oil still looks good!

NO...work through the simpler time-proven checks & balances first.

1) establish your baseline timing
- where are you at idle
- where are you at let's say 2500 RPM

2) do a cylinder compression check
- if you did in fact wipe a lobe, it'll be either INTAKE or EXHAUST, checking the compression will tell you real quick, and if it doesn't pump up that's an INTAKE problem

3) assume it's something else
- check all your spark plugs, does anything look unusual? wet? fouled? etc
- start it up and pull each plug one at a time, does doing so impact the motor in any way?

Check the timing first like others have said. If that checks out, I'd be pulling the top off of that AFB. Especially since you said the fuel filter is dirty. Filters cant filter everything. If they did, nothing would flow. You'll probable find some dirt in there.

I do not see a wiped cam because it runs fine for a 5 mile trip, ' run real good' [ post #6 ]. It could be something as simple as the choke adjustment/position which should be checked.

I had a little time today to blow the fuel filter out, it did have a lot of small stuff in it, but got it mostly cleaned out, next thing going to do is blow out down in the air fuel mixture screws like on this video & maybe that will work!

Yep, stuff got in the carb, put air in both the air fuel mixture screws holes like in the video back idling at 1000rpm after warmed up!.. I just really did not want to mess with them because they have not been mess with in around 7 years, for a long time that carb was adjusted just right, I marked it and counted my turns, hope I got them back in right, seem right in drive way, now take it on a test drive!
