Hi guys,I bought a 68 Dart 270. As you may remember from my previous post the seller claimed it has a 360 with 340 heads from a 1971 mopar.
I saw this video on YouTube today and according to this guy you can identify the motor by looking at the harmonic balancer, the 318 had a smooth one that is narrower and the 360 has a thicker one with a groove in it. Mine has the one with the groove in it which would indicate it’s a 360 based on his info. However my car has the smooth exhaust manifolds, not the “finned” ones.
Anyway,I had time off today to try and get more done on the car. I noticed that the drivers side exhaust manifold has an exhaust leak noise when you accelerate. I found that not only were the bolts loose but there was no manifold gasket on that side!

Here’s the video

The casting number on the exhaust manifold is 2780945 N2. Im assuming MS 90460 Fel-Pro would be the correct exhaust manifold gasket kit?

The factory didnt use gaskets on iron manifolds typically, and IF the head surface and manifold surface are good, they are unnecessary. If you have pitting or corrosion, then the gaskets are normally enough to seal it up

Thanks for the info. I didn’t think so but wasn’t sure. The passenger side definetly has a gasket on it so I assumed the drivers was supposed to as well. I tightened a bolt down I missed that was still a little loose on the underside of the manifold Will test drive it in a bit. Hopefully it will get rid of the “ticking” sound. If I end up needing gaskets guess I’ll get the fel pro. I read on another mopar thread that someone used permatex ultra copper and it stopped the ticking sound.

Also, depending on the year of the cylinder heads, it may have the little 1/4" air injection holes at the bottom of the port, if it does, make sure the manifold covers that, and if not, you would need to plug those holes

NGINE BLOCKS

Casting numbers for the small-block Mopar and big-block Mopar engine blocks can be found on the left (driver’s) side of the block, and will consist of seven numerals. These numbers are different than the stamped eight-digit number found on the right side of the engine. That number is the last eight digits of the Vehicle Identification Number. When identifying the block, you want the raised seven-digit number, not the stamped eight-digit number.

An example of an engine block casting number. In this case, 3698330 – an RB-series 440 cubic-inch block, cast June 28, 1973.

well, they did have a steel shim / spark plug boot heatshield.

That would make sense since my car burned the wires off two spark plugs on that side. Did 360’s get that heat shield shim?

I tightened all the bolts down and it still makes that “ticking” exhaust leak sound.

Thanks for the info. I guess The best way to see it would be to Jack the car up and look up there from underneath. I tried to stick my camera in there from the top but couldn’t see it

The number on the block appears to be
3418496-360 I was told it was a 1971 360 with 340 heads when I bought the car.
