318 or slant 6?

-
Honesty, if your going to put the money into rebuilding one or the other, 318 is the way to go. I've had a few slants and when done right they are somewhat reliable, but a 318 has more options for bolt ons. It would also be cheaper I'd think.

not trying to beat a dead horse to death here but for what you would pay to rebuild a 318 the same can be done to a 360 for more horse and then some

but when it comes down to it you really dont want a slant six there cool and all but when you pull up next to a kid in his caviliar and he smokes you with your slant you will see really fast you need 2 more cylies for what it would cost to turbo a slant and work it up to be "quick" a 318 can be done with less just my opinion

I have thought of modifying a /6 at various times in my life. People who are into them are very strong in their beliefs. What I remember the most was the Hot Rod build on one about five years ago. It made about the same HP as a stock 318 with a 4-barrel and headers with similar performance when they put it in the Duster and ran it.

Kinda cool, definately will turn heads and get attention.

But from a practical standpoint, I would run a SB and not look back.

318.

My own opinion is that Slant sixes are somewhat overrrated on durability.

I vote the 318 also.

I'll get grief :protest: from the slant six crowd, but I also agree with the overrated comment on the slants.
They are tough, but I have seen many with a rod out the side of the block. I'd bet more 4.0 Jeep sixes made 200K + miles than slants ever did.

Both will be fine. Both are economical and will last forever if maintained.
Slant 6 is more forgiving for the less caring
Never had a slant six motor die on me. Killed at least 3 v8's but then again was racing them. but if you're gonna race it --318 of course
If youre gonna drive it to hell and back and spend little time massaging it; slant 6.
I've seen them run hot, low oil etc almost bulletproof in my personal experience with them. They have war stories for a reason
But i like raising the hood with a V8 under there. Slant six is a letdown unless it's a ricer looking on :-)
But I've also driven a 318 with a busted waterpump 100 miles back home without damage. (before i get questions-- waterpump bearing gone out, filled it full of water took the radiator cap off to remove pressure )
So hopefully I was able to add to the confusion :)

I have a 74 Scamp that had a slant with the 833OD tranny and it didn't like it a bit probably wrong gearing in the rear for the slant.I'm in the process of remaking the Scamp and going with the 318 and 833OD tranny don't know what gears I'll run yet but looking for econemy

well things to base the gearing ratio off off

tire size
max rpms you want at your typical hi-way speed

i like to gear my cars for driving at 70-75 for around 3k rpms...which equates to a 3.08 or 3.23 depending on what tire(usualy a 255/60 or 275/60) i'm running on that particular car(didnt calculate converter slippage)

but aslong as your around 1700rpms at 60mph you;ll be ok with a carbed engine/overdrive combo
