This popped up in the wife’s feed.
First night I raced this car!
Think it was 10-11 years ago now
318 magnum engine masters piece. Think it ran 11.79 that first outing

The 318 is a great engine. You've got to admit the Chevy 327 was a great engine also. It powered fast Corvettes, Chevelles and Novas for many years. It had a reputation as having an almost indestructible bottom end. The 318 is every bit as good as the 327 if not better. The 340 gets all the glory, but you can get lots of power from a 318.
 
My SS/MA 80 Aspen 318 run 10s with a the smaller 1 3/8
Thermoquad and 8.5 Compression. It is a portly 3400+
weight and regularly outperforms 283/327 Chevys in class.

My sons Stock 78 Aspen with a small valve/stock compression/stock
.375 lift cam has held the National record well into the 11s and taken him
to an AllStars Championship.

Rod to stroke and Valve angles tip the scales to the Mopar.

I will see if my boy will post some pics when he has time!

My sons Stock 78 Aspen with a small valve/stock compression/stock

to an AllStars Championship.

But I take a flatter Ferrea Valve and cut it down the
small size and add a little massage to it.
When done they flow 220+CFM @ 400 lift and up
to the that point (But not Past that) they are quite close
to my prepared X Heads on my Demon 340 Stocker.

Glad that you Gentleman think I am that Humorous and
and glad Igive you something to get a good laugh about!!!

In a few months when I sell and find a few more extra parts = I will be.
off all these Forums for good as no one seems to appreciate my opinion
when I try to help them.

It is easy to throw mud and laugh at someone from the sidelines
as opposed to invest your time and money to compete in racing
at a National Level.

You might find the View through the Windshield is a lot different
than the view from the stands.

That's quite remarkable. Is the Ferrea 3/8 or 11/32?

I'm sure they do a ford valve that's 1.78

Very impressive. The ET’s you guys squeeze out of some of the combinations are unreal.
Congrats, I know it is a ton of hard work, and trial and error
 
Very impressive! I imagine there are some custom valve angles that make that work out. I'm guessing no porting in that class? The laughs here are'nt directed at you, but at how something that should'nt be competitive is out there slaying the competition.

I'm not laughing at you John I'm laughing at a certain few individuals who believe that those heads can't do that.

Please don’t go. Just give yourself a little break away from here when needed. Some guys are born to get under your skin. Usually they are the guys that pay to have everything done and never take a chance themselves of messing up.

dont let the lol'ing fool you, hysteric been waving your heads accomplishments like a flag on every thread on here discussing 318 heads to the point of obsession!! rest of us enjoy you sharing real world experiences, thanks!

I have really been taking a beating lately on
this particular forum by several guys that will

@GTX JOHN your opinion is always valid because of your accomplishments, you stand in a different category than just about anyone else on this board. He wasn’t laughing at you, he was merely using you (running 302 heads) as an example to mock people who naysay those heads. Please don’t step away from here. See ya at Pomona!

We are required to run Stock stem size.
The Ferrea valves were the best on the
flow bench even stock by quite a bit = as we tested everything
we could find (But they are not cheap).

When we are done with then they resemble a nail head
basically as Flat as my X Wife.

Remember, we are stock lift limited and port CC limited and it irrelevant if they
flow backward over 400 on 318s and 470 on 340s.

A tulip valve might be better at 600/700+. I do not know because
I do not live in that neighborhood!

Its remarkable what a port of that size can do. There's still enough air to run 10's @ 3400 pounds and a true testament to what they are capable of in the "Right" hands.


The Moroso slide rule shows 460 HP to push 3400 pounds to 10.9's or 2.1 HP per CFM of airflow. Truly remarkable and quite a feat John! I take my hat off to you.:thumbsup:
 
John and his machinist could give us a post on “valve angle secrets” lol. I’m sure they would be willing to pass on 100’s of 1000’s of dollars worth of testing they have done over the years. That is info that you will never see floating around.

I have posted a few times about my 318, no one builds them so no one knows how well that run.
My 318 is nothing special 9.4-1 comp it is .60 over with Edelbrock heads, RPM performer intake and a 750 carb, cam is .550 lift, i drove the car on the street and to the track with 4.30 gears, in good air car would go 11.70s all day. In a 70 Duster, i stop working at it but i am sure i could have got more out of it, but i pulled the engine. I plan on building more of the them i just purchase 2 cores to build. They are easier and cheaper to obtain than a 340, so go have some fun and surprise your buddies with how fast your 318 can be.


You may know him John as I think he is also a class racer.

As a rule of thumb you need 2 times the factored HP to
have a Second under Nationally competitive Superstock.
Mine is a bit faster than that when I want it to be.
225HP factor x 2 = 450HP / Aspen SS

For a competitive stocker to be. a second under you need you will
need 1 1/2 the factored HP.
230 HP factor x 1 1/2 = 345HP . Aspen Stock Wagon
a large part of the Difference is Camshafts

The stock cam I run is .375 lift and then only .040 piston to
valve clearance. It is a LOT of Duration and the Duration is
the issue with Piston to Valve Clearance even more than lift ( I am quite
sure my Enemies will have Hessy fit about that ).i will explain that in detail
if needed but it is 2:30 AM at the race track and I am tired we are racing 6 cars

Yeah I figured as much. He lamented the fact that no one here ever wanted to talk about doing up 318's.

I'd imagine those cams are well into the 300+ duration figures.
