Replacing the rear main and oil pump on a 72, 318. The top seal went in fairly easily however it does not come around flush to the bottom of the block. It's recessed roughly 3/16" on each side. I thought it should come around flush to mate with the bottom seal. Thoughts?

Does one half of the seal have built in side seals? Some of those seals have a longer radius so the seal ends mate within the seal bore. Just like we do with 360 seals when we offset the ends.

Any pictures??? What type of seal are you using??? rope, rubber???

yeah, that wasnt right. They are supposed to fit flush with a better fit being a little high, little low on opposite sides.

Let me guess, magnum seal?
Not sure what the one he gave me was for. This idiot could have given me something for an Audi for all I know. The regular guy I go to and trust at this NAPA was off when I picked this up. Had to deal with a second stringer. All good now. The pan is all freshly painted and we'll pop it on tomorrow.

Thanks again for the responses fellas.
