Hey guys

Looking into this 340 I have, noticed big pieces of hard plastic in the engine. Are these old valve seals ? It's hard to see in the photos but they are in between the valve springs and in the oil pan. Any thoughts?? Thanks. Adam

Yep, the old valve seals. They can help plug up (or restrict) the oil pick up.

Thats what I was thinking, so weird this motor was running and didn't smoke at all, just took it out to go through it. I guess I'll be replacing those now too

If the valve guides are tight you won't notice much oil burning.

That's on an exhaust valve. Normally, the exhaust seals dry out and crack apart first, since they get a lot hotter. Years ago, engines didn't even use seals on exhaust valves, because there's no suction there to pull oil down the valve stem and into the cylinders. So the engine wouldn't smoke even if the seals come completely apart.

If you're not getting the heads machined, your gasket set will come with umbrella seals. They just kind of ride around on the valve stem. You can machine the guides for positive seals, that snap on the guide, which is what most late-models have.

I have replaced a few put air in the cylinder to hold the valves up then use a valve spring compressor and and hold a magnet by the keepers so you don't loose them pull the spring off and replace the seal then put the spring back on and keepers then release the tool

It looks like the engine is out of the car . Why don't you pull the heads and check the guides they are probably shot along with who knows what.
