340 distributor question

I finally got my 340 running good but I have to have the distributor vacuum advance rotated way forward towards the intake manifold. I don't really like this but I can leave it if I have to . I removed the dist. several times to clock the vacuum advance more towards the fender, keeping my marks on the shaft pointing towards #1 but it seems like the dist drive gear needs to rotate but the cam gear won't let it . Am I missing something ?
 
.........Yes u would have to move the oil pump shaft, with a big screw driver, put s d in slot and turn it, it will come up and out enough, u will need to turn it back in acouple teeth out so when it goes back in it will be moved over to the next cylinder........or u could just move ur wires clockwise to gain the needed adjustability.......kim.....
