is it possible to squeeze 500-550 hp out of a j headed stock stroke 340 with say 11:1 compression, h beam rods, forged pistons and balanced rotating assembly. also maybe a solid roller and j heads that have been prepped to the max say from shady dell speedshop. i only want to keep j heads because of the visual factor of a sleeper like the rest of my car.

thanks

i am not the one to tell how much power you can get out of that kind of motor, but at that power level i think anykind of sleeperimage is totaly destroyed as soon as you twist the key and it starts up, my rollercamed, J headed 340 where rattling windows all over my neighbourhood as soon as it was started up ;) with a 800-900 unstable idle there whas no way to make a misstake on the power

My 340 in my Valiant is about 500-550hp. It runs 11.20s @ 121 @ 3150lbs race weight. Which is about 435 at the tires.

'73 340 block (half filled)
4.10 bore (old heavy TRW pistons .060)
3.31 stroke (stock 318 poly)
Eagle SIR rods
X heads, mild porting 2.05in / 1.625ex
Comp Cam roller, .630 in / .631 ex lift - 252in / 258ex duration @ .050
Compression approx 14:1
Dual 660 center squirters (the right single four would be just as good on power)

425 - 450 and keeping with your sleeper look, maybe - 500-550 not a chance. you can hear it coming a 1/2 mile away and to make use of it, especially street driven will mean a lot of modifications I doubt you want to make as you have a good looking car. M2CW.

Depends on what type of ear plugs you use!!

Can it be done? Sure. At 11:1? possible. But like they said...no sleeper there at all. The problem becomes the power will be at an rpm peak around 6800 rpm. So it will be sluggish around town under 4500 unless you run the big stall convertor and steeper gears.
