Hi, Im helping my son to build a 1971 dodge demon. He has a 1970 340 hp with this build. My question is this the intake # is 3462848 1. has an avs carb but thinking a new carb would be the way to go.Engine build:arias 10 to 1 pistons,k1 rods using oe steel crank, lunati voodoo cam oe hp heads .oe hp exhaust manifolds.oe dual snorkle air cleaner. Are their any new carbs that would bolt up with out a spacer? If not what would be a good street carb?

Nothing wrong with the OE AVS carbs. (IMO, there excellent) Try it before spending money on a new carb.

Edelbrock's carb line will bolt up and go. There slightly updated from the OE designs. They come in AFB and AFB/AVS hybrids. (AVS top on a AFB bottom.)
Many cfm ratings to choose from. The stock AVS was a 630 cfm carb as per the old Carter tech line.

The old AVS 3 step metering rod carbs can use the flat top rod covers and 2 step rods in place of the raised covers and 3 step rods. Use Edelbrock jets to tune. Discard the OE jets. I do believe there ever so slightly taller. Not 100% on that, but I think so.

The Carters/Edelbrocks are extremely forgiving and easy to tune. While a Holley may have the super tunabilty advantage and a little bit of a HP advantage up top in the RPM range, the Carters never fail to perform and stay in tune.

I think it's funny that some people do this while I'm gutting new Edelbrocks and installing the 3 step primary systems and velocity valves to tailor them closer to Chrysler engines.

3 step primary jets are taller, 2 step jets are the same height as secondary jets. I know these are the only readily available parts to change tune on carbs today...

Cool man, thanks. It's been a long while since I have been inside my AVS carbs. Tuning parts for these AVS carbs have been hard for me to come by. That is why I suggest AFB parts. Edelbrock makes suitable parts to tune with.

Now, the 3 step should be a better system to run and drive with. If the stock setting work... then great!!!!!
