Hello all, New to the site so here goes. 1971 dodge demon, 340 not original. After a long few years of building this car it’s finally time drop the engine back in. I have been waiting for one of the final pieces that was on back order, a speedmaster harmonic dampener. I have noticed that the quality was not great but better than the old 50 year old stock unit so I figured I’d go with it.
After sliding the dampener on the shaft it is now sticking out 1/2 - 5/8 further then the stock one, which is throwing off my pulley alignment. I am unaware what years or different pulley variations that are available but what I need is either , shorter pulley to the v groove , or a longer pulley on the water pump but that will eventually chase its way to problems with the alternator alignment… is there something I’m missing or does it seem something was manufactured wrong from speedmaster? Thanks in advance and sorry for rambling

You need a correct balancer. A stock replacement balancer would be better than what you have.

The speedway balancer does move the mounting face out 1/2 inch . If you stay with this balancer, a different water pump pulley will address the alignment issue. Also, spacers can be used to move your current pump pulley to line up properly. Shifting the alternator can also be addressed by various spacers.

Nice pics, but not a single one of the balancer in question, preferably installed.
Are you sure you've got it all the way on?
BTW, you'll need to rotate your oil filter adapter almost 180*... filter points to the rear, slightly nose down in stock apps and with most headers.

My speedmaster damper was at least 1/2 a thou undersized and needed honing. No way it'll go on fully otherwise. Had a fluid damper and it was undersized too, some people luck out but I didn't.

Thanks for the advise on the adapter, it’s on there loose so I don’t loose it. I still need to take it off and paint it and install the new gaskets

Some speedmaster stuff is okay but they're dampeners at least the one I got didn't fit crankshaft right didn't line up with anything and was heavy as hell so it still sits new in the box on the shelf.pos

I run the Speedmaster fluid damper on my 422 stroker. Took it to the machine shop when I had the rotating assembly balanced and they honed it to fit the aftermarket crank. Because of the thickness, I ended up using the earlier small block (‘69 - back) crank and water pump pulleys and it’s a perfect fit. I’m also running power steering so I use the two groove crank pulley.
