I have a 67 barracuda coupe witch had a 273 . Now it has a 340 just wondering what 340 I got here some of the #drivers side on sided of block 2780930-340-6 ! Drivers side front of block just below head 340R 37440124 I think it says last cpl digits hard to read ?? Passenger side is 06/16/71 must be manufacting date ?

6/16/71 is the casting date of your block.
3744 is the build date 10/28/71
0128 is the unit built that day

Happen to have the vin on it. pass side just below a drain hole and above pan rail.

And it IS NOT a 6 pack block...

So would it have the 71engine specs such as steel crank or the 72 cast ???:violent1:l

Hi Crackedback, just wondering what or how you decoded
the build date and unit number? do you have a chart or sheet
you could post or would be willing to share? Thanks either way.
Wheels.

By info I have found on the Internet doesn't sound like they went to cast crank till spring 72 ??? But wonder if I got 10.5 comp or 8.5 ???

I've had 71 date cast 340 blocks with a 73 build date so the casting date is not a good indicater of weather it is a steel or cast crank. Should be able to tell by the balancer.

Ya according to crackedback that other # I have is assembly date 10/71 ?

The eight digits 37440124 break down as first 4, 3744, are 10,000 day calendar date and the last four, 0124, are unit built that day.

Website with 10,000 day calendar.

I put 0128 in the first response... Oops!

If the stamping is really an R and not a P, then it would be a low compression engine. The R designates regular grade fuel.
