Ok I hate to ask for help (guy thing) but this got me,

74 duster 360 auto , getting no spark while cranking the engine . When I turn the key to the on position I get a spark when I turn the key and start the engine nothing, also when I turn the key off I get a spark, I have changed the starter relay, the coil, the ballast resistor, the ign switch and key set, Bui I can start it if I jump it at the starter relay.

check the air gap inside the distributor.... should be .008 need brass feeler gauge.

check both side of the ballast resistor for voltage also

Tony, if it was the air gap, why would it start when I jump the relay and not with the key

oh....was not sure if you meant start or turn over....

went it starts at the starter relay switch..the key is on? right...

did you check the ballast resistor?

mopar have two circuits...start and run....

i had a problem with the wire that feeds the ballast resistor that comes out of the bulkhead getting corroded ....try pushing on the connectors on the bulkhead...

the duster would just die and not restart...i started wiggling wires...and it would start.

time to get out the test light and start tracing what's got juice...and what does not..

THIS

You must understand how the ignition switch and bypass circuit works.

Your "key on" or "ignition run" voltage is present ONLY with the key "in run." NOT present in "crank."

So the only place the ignition gets voltage during crank/ start is the brown wire which comes off the ignition switch, goes through the bulkhead, and to the coil + side of the ballast.

Crank the engine WITH THE KEY while measuring coil + voltage. If you get nothing, check the bulkhead connector, and if that seems OK, check at the switch connector on the brown wire.
