So what is it about external balance flywheels for 360s that makes them so expensive??

I looked up a flywheel for a 360 and all I found were ones that people are mega proud of, like 3 times a regular neutral balance flywheel.

    What gives

Compared to neutral balance flywheels they either have added weight like this 360 / 727 torq converter, or are drilled in areas to offset the needed weight to balance the external balance crankshaft.

It's strange that the 143 tooth flywheels are always attractively priced but that is for 11 inch clutch and usually for a truck. Try a 130 tooth version for 10.5 inch clutch used in A body and most cars.

Probably low demand, oddball or racing applications. Most A bodies had the automatic trans with the 360s. 318 / 340 manual trans flywheel had the neutral balance flywheel.

Try local machine shops and ask if they have any on the shelf for sale. I found a few that way. They even machine them for you.
Last one cost me $40 machined. The older and grungier the shop the better chances you can find one. Sold my last one for $80.00 at swap meet.

I remember back in the 1990's paying 300 for a new one from Mopar Performance . Ended up selling it when I gave up on that project and got my money back easily. They are expensive, always were and probably always will be

They're simply not as plentiful as the neutral balance flywheels, that's all.

^^They are simply not as plentiful PERIOD^^. Very few cars in the long run, were built with 360 stick. And really, not all that many trucks, either

10.5" 360 LA flywheel was only used in 1974 in a passenger car which is why originals are not easy to locate. That being said we have new ones available in both OE cast wheels or Billet steel. Check out the website.

I was given this as a solution to make the 318 flywheel work with the 360. I have not tried it or confirmed that it will work. Just FYI!

This will work fine. I even made a template so I could drill myself on a drill press.
