Howdy everyone,

I have an interesting choice here.

I have a complete 5.9 Magnum with around 90k miles on it that came out of a '03 Ram.

I also have a '72 Dodge Demon that I'm currently doing bodywork on.

I'll likely build up the 5.9 to as hot or hotter than the 390hp 360 Magnum crate specs (change cam, run carb, buy heads from IMM).

I'm thinking about doing one of the following:

1) Fabricate a turbocharger for the 5.9 (flipping the exhaust manifolds in the process) with low to mid boost (the Dakota guys have run 10-15psi on a stock shortblock without problems but I'll probably keep it below 10).

OR

2) Run the hot 5.9 as is and buy another 5.9 to build into a 408 stroker short block, then later swap the heads, carb, new cam and headers to the 408 and swap the engines out.

The car is currently a shell on a rotisserie so I'm more or less starting from scratch. I think the cost for fabricating my own turbo kit will be similar to building a 408 short block so I think the cost's likely a wash.

My goal is to have the Demon run as close to 11.49 in the quarter mile as possible without going lower because I don't want to put a roll cage in the car (want to be able to use my rear seats). So, assuming a heavy estimate of 3450lb with me in the car filled with gas, I think about 525hp at the flywheel would be my limit.

One advantage I see with this is that turbos seem to like higher rear gears, so even with a 833 I won't need to stop at every gas station while cruising down the highway.

But an advantage to the 408 is perhaps a cleaner looking engine bay that's simpler.

I'm not favoring one or the other right now.

What do you all think? What would you do? Thanks!

Turbos can be more street friendly needing less cam .
Depends on how much work you can do ?
How much money you have to spend ?
How much street driving ?
Both I think can get you what you want if your chassis is set up right .

The 408 will make more power down low and last longer doin it.

Well I have an all steel valiant and my 408 got me mid 11s and I can drive it anywhere on the streets. It's all about cooling and ur set up a good gear is 3.91 . Turbos is too much money in fabwork and all kinds of drama with boost leaks and piping and waste gate issues.its more annoying then anything.and to make it run good u are gonna need a good carb that runs u good money it's like. 7k plus commitment and that's the low range h can do a judge 407 for 4500 bucks go 408 and add nitrous better cheaper more fun

Well there is a guy local with a 67 dart mild 318 with a turbo drives car to track runs consistent low 11's did the turbo himself car looks and sounds mild .

You can look dart up on YouTube made 397 rwhp and 398 tq I think at 13 lbs boost with a crane 467 lift cam this is also on pump gas .
Pretty impressive I think !

I was thinking the same thing later down the road when my Paxton Supercharged 360 is going to need a rebuild. Since I plan on racing it (mostly autocross, but with some road racing) I was planning on removing the supercharger and just stroking it to make the extra power (it should make about 375 at the wheels when installed). Couple reasons of doing this is it's simpler and it should be lighter.

Otherwise, I think turbos are awesome. If I had the manufacturing tools and experience I'd love to experiment with them.

I don't think I have patience or all the tools and time for a turbo myself .
I just think turbos can make a lot of power and remain street able .
I would like a Paxton but my wallet wouldn't !!!
What is your car making now ?
What are motor specs ?

Nice thing about turbo's is that you can make the same power as a hotter NA engine but because the power comes on more gradual it's less taxing on your drivetrain. And at cruising speed you're at 2-3psi and can get better mpg due to the fact that turbos like higher gears.
