383 Water pump housing water passages

I'm new to Big Blocks so I'm learning as I go along.

I mapped out the water pump passages on the pump housing.

  1. Water inlet to deepest part of housing (pump suction side)
  2. Pump output (lower passage on back side) to drivers side of block
  3. Return from block (upper passage on back side) to outlet (T stat housing)
  4. Bypass hole between inlet and outlet
  5. Return from block (upper passage on back side) to outlet (T stat housing)
  6. Heater hose return to deepest part of the housing (pump suction side)
  7. Heater hose supply from block (upper passage on back) to heater core inlet
  8. Pump output (lower passage on back side) to passenger side of block

YET ANOTHER ANNOYING story from the OLD DAYS

Arrived at then NAS Miramar, San Diego, late May, 1970...Supposed to have been 2 years there, ended up 4

I arrived in a recently bought 63 Chev SS 327, later traded it and some cash for 69 383 RR and later bought a friend's 70 440-6 RR and when the big gas crunch came, swapped a 340 into the 70 RR. I bought a 64 "440" (body) Dodge with a 426 wedge, later ended up with a 440 in that

ANYway I decided I just HAD to have a "custom" dash, so some sheet metal later. I dislked then, and I disliked now, electric gauges. But the speed shop did not have a mechanical water temp, and talked me into some fancy face new ones, with an electric temp.

AND IT READ NEAR COLD. So I drove it a couple weeks or a month, and then one day, magically IT STARTED READING MORE NORMALLY. Mid scale.

BUT as it turned out, the thing would "puke" on shutdown, so I knew it was overheating.

I finally ended up tearing the rad and water pump/ stat out to inspect the block for rust and crap, etc, and everything just looked SWELL. I had already tried a new stat.

I was standing there, tools and stuff all over the ground, and stepped one way or back AND LITERALLY tripped/ kicked the water pump. AND IT JINGLED!!!!! Turns out the stamped steel pump impeller had BROKEN LOOSE fro the hub, and the damn thing was just cooling on convection!!!

Our old RADAR shop was off to the left. One of our two service trucks, 62/63 Chev stepside stick 3 spd, I don't remember who's E body shaker hood 440, "Nelson's" either olds or Poncho version of Chevy II, My black 64 426 with trunk open, A friend's 68 383 RR, and far right, my 70 440-6 RR

The building here is a backup generator, all of this is gone now, paved by the Marines and turned into ramp space.
