Hello Fabo,

I have a 400 shortblock for sale. Pistons say .040. The drivers side ear is broken(please see the photo). I purchased this shortblock locally(Los Angeles) and never did anything with it. Motor turns over freely. #'s on the block are: 3698630-400, and the date code is: 3/20/72. Happy to provide more photos or any other info to anyone interested. Pick up only in Los Angeles, 90039. $150

Thanks for the question. I do not know. Someone please chime in if I'm mistaken, but I believe I can tell cast from forged by the damper. If so, I will have an answer for you on Thursday.

is the parting line on the crank sharp and gagged its cast . if it ground down and it wide its a forged steel crank . these are forged steel crankshafts . can you see the parting lines are ground down .

If there's an "E" on the stamped pad, pass.side near cylinder head end, it'll be cast.

if its the original crank that plays . just look at the crank .

The OEM never made a steel crank for a 400

Actually they did. In 72, there were a very few steel crank 400's, usually in 4 speed cars. They are like hen's teeth, but the part # shows up in the 72 books. Saw one in a 72 400 4 speed Charger.

#'s on the damper are: 3614374. According to 440Source, this is a cast crank.
