I am contemplating building a 416 stroker with my 340, but I also like the shorter stock stroke. What made you decide on the stroker? I am thinking running a thumpr cam in the 340 (even know some do like them), it seems to be ideal for a 10.5 CR. Like I said, I am at a crossroads and what helped your decision on going stroker?

At one time I contemplated a big block. I love the low RPM torque. Cramming one in to a tight space did not appeal, so I decided to do a very cost effective "junkyard 360" which upgrades heads, intake carb and cam, leaving the shortblock untouched. I still think that's a good proven pathway. It was contemplating the camshaft that got me over to the stroker darkside. With stock flat dish pistons one has to be careful since there are no valve reliefs. I got thinking about a piston change. I realized once I got into the shortblock I just wanted to go through the whole thing. I got reading about the 408, discovering that the 360 is an ideal candidate for stroking and would get me into the big block displacement zone. I decided since this may be the only performance engine I'll ever build, and a major determinant of how much I would enjoy the car, that although mopar performance is costly, I would bite the bullet. I'm not sure but a 440 may have been a less expensive option to arrive at a similar destination.

The 440 has the distributor in front. lol
The big block is easy to swap intakes. lol
      oil pump is exterior.
      camshaft access easier.
whats not to love about a big block. lol
I will stick with the big block/ low deck. lol

Thanks for your insight. I have a cast crank 340 that had previous been balanced and bored .030 over. I am not sure if I want to build a stock, high revving engine, a 372 stroker (ideal stroke/rod ratio), or all out stroke it and get big cubes.

          stick or auto?
          auto go BIG
nothing wrong with the thumper lobes

it's just the really long exhaust makes no mechanical sense
and the 107 LCA is not daily driver friendly
depends if you are only going for the sound
gas mileage sucks big time opening the exhaust that early

I don't want to steal a thread, but I am running an auto A518 46RH OD, with 2400-2600 stall converter with 3.73 gears. I have a .508 purpleshaft that was in it when I bought the 340, but it was too big for my combo. I wanted a big cam sound, but did not have any other use for a big cam.

Been off the forum for a bit working on my daughter's house so she can sell it. Hot market she had offers above asking before we were done.
Just got Harland Sharp roller rockers to solve issues I was having with the stock valve train. I'll be posting on my build thread listed below.

Its about time ! I worked for a biz here that would go without a needed employee before paying a reasonable wage to get decent employees ... Meanwhile the owner made millions per year !
