have a nice 3.55 suregrip supposedly rebuilt but checked the pinion / ring gear pattern and it is not correct.Are there shims in the 489 case or is this set with the crush sleeve?

There are shims. If you take it apart, I would suggest getting the crush sleeve eliminator.

shims are used under the pinion head bearing to set pinion depth which along with backlash sets the gear pattern ,, the crush sleeve sets pinion bearing preload.
