Anecdotal story comes to mind since you mentioned it loads weird.

Was running some BBC on the dyno many years ago...... 427, 454...... don’t really remember.
Large oval heads, had a TeamG 4150 intake on it.
Ran horrible with my old dyno mule Holley 4781 on it.
Well..... it “ran” fine, but it worked poorly during any kind of pull.
Lots of antics, surging, etc.
This carb had been on piles of motors previously....... always worked fine.
That’s part of why it was a dyno mule carb.
Tried a 750dp...... a bit better.
700dp, a bit better.
650dp, a bit better.
Ede 600...... loaded and ran just fine.
A bit lean, and down on power...... but it “ran better”.
Nice and clean loading the motor, and during a pull.

I don’t even recall what the final outcome of that deal was, I just remember when we started, that the smaller the carb we put on it, the better it loaded/ran.
Haven’t had a situation like it since.

I took the distributor apart and shortened up the advance slots so it actually has some initial timing, the advance was kind of notchy too, fixed that and pulled out one very heavy spring and replaced with a lighter one. Picked up almost 4 " vac at idle with 17 initial. Now I wait for the carb to show up for Friday. Its runs much better but the silly annular booster carb is pulling 1.7" at 5300--and its kinda lean which I'm sure this engine doesn't like. J.Rob
