Hmm, were these an option on cars? Mine doesn't have one and it doesn't seem like it was removed.

Check the federal laws. At some time around then, the feds mandated padded dashboards. My guess is manufacturers had a heads-up and started by offering it as an option, similar to how air bags started. My 64 and both 65's have padded dashboards.

My 65 GT 'vert, 65 Signet and 65 Barracuda all came with a dash pad. A mordoor 65 Dart I parted out never had one. According to my 65 Dealer Showroom album, they were standard on the Dart GT, Signet and Barracuda, optional on everything else.
