'63 727 out of a Fury. Any good?

No. The 63 had a rear pump. Not sure it'd even fit in the trans. tunnel of a small A-body without cutting and modifying the tunnel. It's also not nearly as efficient as a newer 727 without the rear pump. Only time I'd ever use one is if it were for a #'s matching car. Get a 71 through 73 model if you can find one. They were the best all around for performance. Before 71 they had the narrow front clutch bushing and no part throttle kickdown. After 73 they went to a load controlled front servo which isn't as good and a lot of them only had 3 pinion planetary sets vs. 4 in the older ones. You can build any trans. with all the good stuff but finding one makes it easier and usually cheaper.

BTW: if the 63 727 is any good $100 is a good price as parts for them are getting hard to find. You might be able to flip it and make some money if you want to take a chance. Most that are good, yet needing a rebuild, sell for about double that around me.

Can you please elaborate on why the later 727's are not as good for performance? I just installed a drivetrain which includes a later model(1979 ish) 727 in my dart. I am curious as to what will be different about driveability with a later model 727?

After 73 they went to a load controlled front servo which isn't as good (doesn't shift as good) as the older servo and a lot of them only had 3 pinion planetary gear sets vs. 4 pinion gear sets in the older ones. 4 gear planetaries are touted to be 33% stronger. It's easy to change those parts to make it like the earlier model if you so desire. Your 79 is no piece of junk so don't think I meant it that way. It's basically the same scenario how mid/late 60's to 70 engines made more power due to higher compression, better heads, and a better cam.
