64 barracuda 273 engine timing

-
My book only goes back to 1965. 5 degrees BTDC Manual, 10 degrees BTDC Automatic. Vacuum disconnected from distributor & plugged. I'd probably try a bit more advance than this.

It's as much advance as it will take without pinging or 10 before....whichever is higher. With today gasoline, I'd be surprised if you can advance it to more than 5 BTDC. If it pings at TDC, you need better fuel, water injection, or you'll have to build the engine with lower compression. Trying to run an engine with ATDC timing will usually cause it to overheat and get terrible mileage.

It's a 64 so if it's stock it's a 2bbl & should be around 8.8 (IIRC) to one or so compression ratio. He might be able to get by with 10 BTDC.
