found a 64 barracuda for sale. the owner says its quite rusty but has a v8 with a 4 speed. was this a factory option in 64 or was it added later?

I think the rust part was an option added later.=P~

Yeah, they had 64 4-speed Barracudas, but most were 2 bbl cars until late 64 when you could get a Commando car. My brother has a 64 273 4-spd that he got off of me.

I had a 64 Dart GT convertible 273 4spd and my Dad had a 64 Barracuda 273 4spd. the 4speed came out in 64 the 4bbl in 65. there may have been a few in late 64 but I've never seen one.8)

I had a 64 Barracuda with a 273 Commando 4/spd. It had an Edelbrock hi-rise when I got it in 1970 and ran like a raped ape.
Cyclone fenderwell headers, Holley 780 dual feed, Ford 9" rear with 3:90's, Mallory dual point distributor, weld on traction bars,
Sun tach with sending unit. It looked tough, sounded tough and was only beaten 3 times in 3 years and I ran against a lot of big blocks too.
I traded it in for a 73 ElCamino in 1973 in Biloxi, MS minus all the goodies except for the bars and headers. Wish I could find it again.
