I decided it would be a good time to replace my gas tank with a new one. I have done 3 repair jobs with the "silly puddy" type gas tank repair stuff and it is leaking again in another area. Also, my gas gauge is not reliable.

Here is my plan:
Buy a brand new tank, straps, sending unit, and grounding strap.
My question is which company would provide a good tank for a good price?
And, what sending unit inlet size should I buy, they come in various sizes 3/8, 5/16, etc. I would like to hear from anyone whom has done this before.
I have seen some Canadian Gas tanks on ebay, is this a good choice?

The Canadian tanks are of good quality.
Originally your car came with a 5/16" fuel line. Unless your going for high HP, stay with the 5/16" fuel line and sender.

Get a sender with only 1 line coming out of it. Some of them have 2 lines, 1 for the fuel line, the other for a vent line. All you need is the single line.

I have bought a couple tanks off Ebay. They were pretty inexpensive and worked fine.

Thanks for the advice. I am keeping my 225 slant 6 stock, so I will go for the 5/16'' line.

Can anyone think of any other parts I should order to do this job?

If you are getting a new tank and sending unit, you might as well get a new
pre-bent fuel line from tank to carb.It would be a 2 piece set. And of course a new inline fuel filter and 5/16" rubber fuel line. And then you might as well get new hose clamps, and then..........It doesnt stop. :yawinkle:

Inline tube or Fine lines will be your best bet for your fuel lines.

Thanks for the help I just ordered the tank which is the Canadian one, part# CR11A. Cost me $159.00 with free shipping. I used an ebay bucks coupon for a $26 credit so the tank came to $133.00. I believe the place is called Maryland Mustang or something like that. The ground strap came from Valley vintage for $13 plus $3 shipping. And the gas tank straps are from Rockauto.com for $16 after an online coupon. Is this thrifty or what? I am going to have the local guy here put the tank in so he wants to look it over before I order the sending unit.

I just read an article on slantsix.org, and it recommends a new filler tube gasket when changing the tank on these cars. Does anyone know where I can get one?

I just found one on ebay for $2.00 plus $2.00 for shipping. I also see a fuel tank pad for sale online. Is this something that should be replaced while doing this work?

$2.00 ? Are you sure it is the black rubber grommet that goes around the filler tube ?

Because there are 2 gaskets for the filler tube. There is a thick black rubber grommet, which connects the filler tube to the tank, and a thin white foam gasket that connects the filler tube to the body by the gas cap. The black grommet usually sells for around $10-$14 and the thin white gasket sells for around $2.00 Both can be had on E-bay.

And you should always have a tank pad. More than likely your 40 something yr old pad is going to crumble when the tank comes out. Replace it with a new one.

Thanks, I want to make sure I do this job right the first time. I will look for the black grommet when I get home from work. Does anyone have a link to the filler tube tank grommet?

Found the tank grommet at the vans store on ebay. I have found everything except the proper electric connector for the sending unit. Mine has been changed with one of the round type electric repair kit types sandwiched between 2 nuts. I am thinking old school type connector similar to the old ford starter solenoids. Does anyone know what I am talking about? Or where to look for this connector?

I am about to replace the tank in my 64 dart and I am confused about the grommet.

I measured the fill tube and it looks like it is 1 3/4 just like my 63 dart ?

should I order a 63 tank ? I know a 2" grommet is going to be too big and the 63 tank comes with a 1 3/4 grommet.

The tanks and grommets should all be the same size from 63-66 (early A).
Order it for a 64, youll be fine.

Not sure where you came up with the 2" number, but thats probably for a 67 on.

Maybe, but the 63 tank comes with the grommet and the 64 does not.

The only grommet I can find is for 63 to 66.

the 63 tank is cr11f
the 64 tank is cr11a

Was it 67 that they went to the larger fill tube ?

You got me totally confused here.

Are you looking for a tank for a 64 ?

If so, buy a tank for a 63-66 A-body.
And a Grommet for a 63-66 A-body.

I believe in 67 they went to the larger fuel tube.

Sorry for the confusion just trying to figure out the difference between the cr11f and the cr11a

other than the cr11f come with the grommet.
They are the same price.
and yes I have a 64 but I did not think there was a difference between them.

Have no idea what the difference is between the 2 part numbers.

If it is the same vendor ask him.

Like I said, there should be no difference in the tanks from 63-66.

If you want the 64 and it doesnt have the grommet, tell him if he throws it in you will buy it. Remember your cash is King.

I have been told to makes sure you buy the canadian tank, I purchased my tank on ebay with free shipping for $159.00 it was the same part number Napa and Advanced auto carries, but at twice the price. I received my tank from Maryland Mustang, I am very happy with them. I am sure they can help answer any questions you may have.
