65 Barracuda Factory Stripe Colors

-
Am I right thinking the stripes were all painted on, and that these days if you want a vinyl kit, you still have to paint the hood striping because of the ridge ?
Yes they are painted on. There is a company that makes a stencil kit to paint the stripe. I contacted them to see if they also offered a vinyl stripe kit for the '65 Barracuda, and was told that they didn't. Due to the front raised tip (ridge) of the hood it wasn't possible to install a vinyl stripe because it won't adhere properly, and wrinkles.

I did buy the stencil kit, (about $100) but my painter didn't use it, he preferred using masking tape as he said he was more comfortable with it, and more confident about getting it right.

A stripe kit is advertised here, but I'm not familiar with it or how it works on the hood ridge. It may be manufactured to work fine on the ridge.

Kemper, That kit is from Phoenix Graphics. The people I spoke with (and bought the stencil from) is Graphic Express. Phoenix Graphics may have figured out a way to apply the strip over the nose. Maybe a different type of "more flexible" vinyl, who knows. Shake the dice and try it, no returns according to Classic Industries on that one. I really like how my painted stripe turned out. Its clear coated and there is no ridge to catch wax, dead smooth.

Yeah. I'm going to paint mine if I decide to put them on. I'm not sure of the sheen and I don't want shiny. Another option is to go to the local sign shop and get vinyl put on in whatever sheen I want. That would probably leave more of a ridge also.

Kemper, So, if you're thinking about painting the stripe on, and you are not going to clear coat over, you may want a gloss color for the stripe. If you go with a satin or flat stripe, you will have a problem when you wax the car. Wax on flat or satin is not as good as wax over gloss. Not only that, but you may want to buff the stripe, and buffing flat or satin would make it glossy anyway, might as well start just start with gloss.

I'm thinking that my satin paint will probably be good for washing only. I doubt I could use wax or buff it and don't really need to. I would need a good paint for the stripe and would like it to be satin.

When they were painted on at the Dealer, were they left with an “edge” ?
They didn’t clear cars back then, did they ? ( Or did they ).

You'd probably be fine with satin. Sooner or later you'd get wax on it though, I doubt it would be a problem. I have satin black on the radiator support and I'm pretty sure it could be waxed without issue.
