so the quick flip got a snag
we finally put power to it
and got nothing but grinding
starter didn't look old ,no history on this car
pulled the starter and ring gear looks ok
the starter gear does have some chips
question is are there differnet ring gears on these
does mopar use the same starter for auto/manual
i don't know if these ever worked
thanks nutz

After some very early starters that IIRC went away by 1962, slant six starters are all the same (and the same as V8s from the same era). And it would take some serious creativity to get a wrong-sized ring gear on there. Try seeing if the starter spins if you apply 12V to both terminals and ground the body with the starter on a bench.

If it was grinding, then it was not kicking out far enough to engage the ring gear. I've seen some dirt and grease gum up the slots in the starter shaft and bushing and cause the starter bendix to stick. You might just try cleaning it up real good.

Think its the first time in ten years some one try to crank it
Will polish the gear a little and bench it a few times

if'in the bat-tree you was trying weren't 100% it'll give you the same symptoms.

so start from a known good place there.

Battery was good
I did see some chips on the starter gear
Like I said I'm sure it was years since last time any one tryed to start
Shaft could be rusty

You could have a mismatch of starter and ring gear. It would depend on the year of your transmission (automatic I presume) and the year and type of starter. If it's a '64 or later transmission (converter) and '64 and later starter, they should work together. '60-some '63's could have the earlier stuff which don't play with the later parts.....can't mix and match.

There are some asterisks, terms and conditions on that. The direct-drive '60-'61 starter you're thinking of (with 9-tooth drive pinion) is not interchangeable with the '62-up gear-reduction starter (with 10-tooth drive pinion). But the direct-drive, 9-tooth starter was used on Canadian-built Slant-6s through '66, and on some US-built '63 Slant-6s in cars, and on some US-built pre-'73 Slant-6 Dodge trucks, and there have been shadowy reports of their use on some '70-'71 US-built Slant-6 cars.

And it would take some serious creativity to get a wrong-sized ring gear on there.

No creativity required. The two applicable ring gears are as follows:

Chrysler p/n 2121 195 (ATP ZA-545): 148 teeth, for use with 9-tooth starter

Chrysler p/n 2121 196 (ATP ZA-505): 122 teeth, for use with 10-tooth starter

All that said, if this car hasn't had a starter or transmission swap, the problem is probably just a faulty starter. (On the other-other hand, maybe the car was parked long-long ago because someone did a parts swap and couldn't get the starter to work and gave up…!)

But you say "starter doesn't look old". Maybe show us a pic of the starter; let's see what kind it is. Judging from pics in your quick-flip thread, it's a US car, not a Canadian unit.

Er-ruhh…you did check your battery cables to make sure they're not internally broken, and the battery is known to be good, yeh?

New battery
New looking cables
Ill take pick of starter and what I can see of the fly wheel
No history on anything...its all a mystery right now
So 10 is the magic number as of now
