we are putting a 360 from a 1978 dodge van into my 67 barracuda conv. We removed the pan from the 360 and installed the pan from the 1972 318 that was in the car only to discover that the rear pan sealing area is larger on the 318 pan leaving a gap to large to seal up can any one offer a solution to this problem? Thank you. Pat.

You need an oil pan from/for a passenger car 360.
273, 318 and 340 have the same seal front & rear. 360's only have the smaller seal in the back, as you discovered the hard way.

I'm not sure if all Magnum pans (318 & 360) will fit or only those for a 360.
*****Scratch that, because Magnums were never installed in cars. Only trucks & vans. People putting Magnum engines in a car have the same problem as you. But there are some Stock class racers that use a 2000(?) Dakota pan on their cars. It is rear sump, but may require some "adjustments" to the engine location.*****

Milodon Part #30755 available at most mail order warehouses (Summit+Jegs).
Or you can try to find a used one. As Myron said, a 360 passenger car pan is what you need.

Not trying to confuse the issue and it may not apply in this case, but I read something on here about magnum 360 rear seals being thicker due to crank being slightly smaller?? Member on here posted it due to someone hanving a PITA rear seal leak

LA 360 and Magnum 360 use the same oil pan...

LA 318 and LA 340 use the same oil pan...

and now Magnum 5.2 (318) and Magnum 5.9 (360) use the same oil pan...
