I still have a long way to go, but I've been making some progress on my Barracuda. This is my first attempt at restoring a classic. I've done everything myself so far, which it why it's nowhere near a professional look. The plan is to get the inside in decent condition, get the motor running great(340 currently being rebuilt - est comp. end of August), and of course have the brakes, suspension, steering working properly. Plan is to drive it unpainted for about two years then take it to the paint and body shop(still can't decide on a color, but I have time). I have flushed all the old fluid out on the front brakes and now have them working, but I am not getting fluid to that back. I will be looking into the distribution block this weekend to see if my problem is there. Picture of my progress below. I still have a few wrinkles to pull out of the headliner.

My plan was to pull the gas tank and take it to a radiator shop to be boiled out. I was hoping the sending unit would be in great condition and the gas tank have only minor sludge at most. Wishful thinking I guess...this is what I found. New gas tank and sending unit on order now. I noticed a cut wire hanging from the bottom of the fuel pump. I have to find how this should be routed.

That's a nasty looking tank and sending unit! It will be nice to have new stuff though....looks like a great car :)

What's the trim called that goes with the gill molding? I need to find mounting hardware for it. Sorry for the bad picture quality.

Rocker molding for the 68 model commonly referred to as gills and spears.
The burlwood trim is sort of rare in a 68. That changed to a linear wood grain midyear.

Thanks 66340sedan. The tank looks great on the bottom. I guess that insulation has been holding moisture on top.

Thanks Redfish

Hello fabo. I have a couple of questions. Are these stock shocks? If so, does the hose just connect between the two shocks? Should the yellow wire from the fuel pump be running through a hole somewhere into the trunk?

^^ Those are not stock shocks- they're air shocks- typically used either to raise the height of the rear of the car by pumping air into the shock bodies through a valve connected to that little air line you see running between the shocks. They were big in the 80's, but haven't been used much since.

Thanks BobK. Hopefully these were good shocks to use without pumping them up. I may have to add some air to see how they hold.

I've received and installed my new gas tank and sending unit. In the process I removed the electric fuel pump. I'll store it away in case it's needed later. I also located the valve for the shocks. I'll replace the air tubes and see if those puppies still work.

I thought it was coming to life tomorrow, but I screwed up and didn't realized that I don't have the correct motor mounts. I don't think my auto parts store is going to have the brackets. I just had to prop it here for now until I can get the engine mount brackets ordered.

Should have my mounts by Wednesday. Hopefully it can come to life by the weekend.

I have the engine in now, but have not tried to start it yet. I have a few issues to fix.
1. I have a fuel leak around the sending unit
2. No headlights or dash lights
3. Car rolls freely no matter what gear I put it in.

It gets frustrating when you spend a whole day working just to discover more problems. Still making progress though.

Check the lock ring on the tank, new lock rings suck. did you keep your old one? Trany have plenty of fluid?

Yes, I believe I kept the old lock ring. I'll try it out. I've changed the fluid and filter in the transmission. Even when in park, I can easily roll the car.

Ignore the yellow hose. I realized late last night that I didn't have a hose for the heater core lines so I installed this temporarily.

Thanks to help from spl440 the motor is now running. The transmission is shifting into gear as well. I have not driven it yet due to the gas leak(need new lock ring), intake gasket leak, and no kick down linkage. I have a partial linkage(picture below) that I need to get parts for so that it can be complete. If anyone has parts to complete this linkage, please let me know. Thanks

I've acquired and installed the correct kickdown linkage assembly. I've disabled my stock gauge voltage limiter abs installed the RTE solid state voltage limiter. My fuel and temp gauges are still not working though. I'll figure that out later. I've installed Remflex part 6027 header gaskets to get rid of an exhaust leak and they work great. I'll be installing my rear window and KYB Gas-a-just shocks this weekend and hopefully get they timing dialed in with the help of spl440. Should be ready for a ride then. Video below of current progress.

Next steps are to get tires and new mufflers(undecided on which ones), then just drive and enjoy while I save up for disc brake conversion, 4 speed conversion, and paint. I plan to have the latter done in about 2 years.
