I have been smelling that mechanical greasy hot smell after getting out of the car after driving sometimes.

Pulled the drums on the Scamp to adjust the brakes and found the seal on the left rear starting to leak.

Is it correct to take the axels out, just take the flange bolts off and yank the axels out? No C clips on a 7 1/4?

Yep flange bolts hold it in. You may need a jerk tool to pull the axle. Years ago my bro-in-law put off fixing (68 Lemans I think). We were the 1st 2 cars in line at gate to drive-in theater. When the box office opened he had to drag 1 rear wheel through and out of others way. Next day we fixed it right where it sat.
Footnote incase you didn't know... Do not rely on differential oil to lube the new bearing. Pack it with grease or you will fry it. Good luck

Thanks Redfish, speaking of seized bearings, while cruising down the freeway yesterday, a wheel with a axel stub goes bouncing down the freeway, a guy in the right lane braked real hard and the tire bounced right over the car.

Never saw the car it came from, it was bouncing toward us, must have been from a car on the other side of the freeway.

Steve, you can use the drum as a slid hammer by putting it on backwards and only putting the lugs on so they are flush or a little less with the stud, then put the drum against the flange and pull it towards you on the studs just like a slide hammer. The bearings on a 7 1/4 are a sealed bearing so you can't pre-lube them. The wheel bearings and seals are different between the 9" and 10" brake cars.
