I'm considering venting a 72 carter bbs bowl vent into a 73 slant 6 charcoal canister with new charcoal.
The 72 carter doesn't have a ported vacuum source.
Is there a safe way to accomplish this?
Any ideas?

To use the 1972 carburetor without a purge port with the 1973 charcoal canister, mimic the 1972 system by adding a canister purge valve, two hose tees, and rubber hose as needed. The following listing includes some purge valve brands and part numbers:

  • GM 17091154
  • Standard Motor Products CP104
  • Wells PV107
Connect the purge valve, hose tees, and hoses to the charcoal canister and to the carburetor, distributor vacuum advance line, and PCV line as shown in the following image:

Thank you for your advice. I really appreciate it. I've checked on line. And AI answered but wasn't as strait forward as your reply. Witch is what I was looking for. There's nothing like human intelligence!. And common sense.
 
I have a purge valve coming In a few days. And tee fitting.
When I refill the charcoal canister with washed media. How do I hold the steel mesh ( 1 4 in. Dia. And 1 smaller. Witch sets on a pedestal and About 1 In. Dia. ) into place? If you refill with charcoal from the bottom ( witch I have the bottom nicely removed). I would assume that the 4 in. Screen is on or near the top of the canister.

I have not taken one apart myself, and I haven't seen details of construction beyond some general descriptions. Chrysler made their own canisters at their Introl division. The larger screen may actually go on the bottom, followed by an open cell foam layer, then the lower grating.

The replaceable fiber filter (Chrysler number 3577586) is fitted over the grating. The smaller screen may fit at the top over the PCV port to prevent charcoal from being pulled into the engine. To hold the upper screen in place, if there is material, melt over a bit of the plastic to hold the screen. Use a soldering iron or hot knife. Otherwise use white glue which will not react with gas fumes. Hot glue is a possibility too.

Standard Motor Products CF-1 is a replacement filter for 3577586, if needed.

I got the standard cp104 vaccum check valve installed per the directions of the schematics shown above. And I noticed a new rough idle from the engine.
I found out. If I pinched the line that goes from the charcoal canister purge port on the carburetor side closed. The idle returns to normal.
Any idea what could be causing the rough idle?
Also. There was an high pitch buzzing sound coming from the top of the standard cp104 checj valve. I turn the idle up until it disappeared. Is this normal?
 
Make sure your distributor vacuum advance hose does not have vacuum when the engine is at curb idle. If it does, that'll open the purge valve and cause what amounts to a vacuum leak. Raising the idle speed can mask the symptom, but won't fix it. Buzzing from the valve at idle suggests you do have some vacuum in the distributor advance line at idle. This means your throttle plate is open wider than it should be at curb idle, which suggests your basic ignition timing is retarded.

Do the same thing I advised this guy to do on his '72 (paragraph that starts with "So, try this"), and pretty good odds that'll have everything all sorted.

One other thing, since you have a '73: have you bypassed the OSAC valve yet? If not, do so now. It's on the passenger side of the firewall. One hose to carburetor, other hose to distributor. Instead, run one hose from the carburetor's vacuum advance port directly to the distributor, leaving the OSAC valve unconnected to anything.

I've had my OSAC valve unhooked for 40 years.
I checked the timing, 8" BTDC. The throttle plate is closed. It has a very small opening. I assume just enough for a good mixture.
As before. It resembles the previous schematic. The tank nipple is stopped off because the tank is vented to atmosphere.
 
Timing sounds good, but how much vacuum do you have in the vacuum advance line at (correct) curb idle?

Also, maybe fix the tank venting so it's correct.
