67 Dart with a 727 behind a 360
previous owner says a Shift improver kit was installed unknown as to what kind.
she slips in 2nd.
shifting manually 1st is good tight no slip.
shifting manually from 1 to 2 slips.
shifting manually from 2 to D good tight firm shift.
shifting manually from D to 2 slips.
in D shifting automatically shifts from 1 to D and skips 2nd sometimes.
any thoughts or help pointing me in the right direction would be great.
thx

I would replace the valve body that you know is good . Not hard to do .

Is your kickdown hooked up and adjusted properly?
In order of probability;
above adjustment
a way out-of-adjustment KD band,
a problem with the KD servo,
a leak in that circuit;say a broken accumulator piston,or a misplaced/forgotten #2check-ball,
EDIT Possible toasted band
.
Less likely, but on the table are;
a Messed up kit installation,
insufficient throttle pressure or line pressure, or some combination of the two,
a stuck governor plug on the 1-2 shift valve,

Did not think of that.
i will look at the kickdown adjustment .
thank you.

At wot the kickdown lever should be all the way forward. It's a little tricky to get it just right, easier with 2 people. Stuff some rags in the carburetor so you don't flood the sh*t out of it. I adjusted mine so I could remove the end of the shaft from the kickdown lever at wot easily just to make sure it was bottoming out too early. Does that make sense?

makes sense.
ill let ya'll how it works out hope it cures my 2nd gear slip problem.
thank you.

And make sure the actual lever is not slipping on the shaft coming out of the transmission. Shaft coming out of the transmission will be D shaped and the lever will a small bolt that snugs it down like a 3/8" or 7/16" head I think.

That and a burned band probably.

just adj the linkage.
(its a cable on mine)
still slipping in 2nd only.
gonna try to adj the kickdown band.
what i found to adj it.
loosen the 3/4 nut while holding 5/16 stud
tighten the 5/16 stud till snug or 10 in lbs.
back it off 1 1/2 turns.
hold the 5/16 , tighten 3/4 nut to 35 ftlbs
thx for your help.
wish me luck.
thx mike

Probably wouldn't hurt to check the adjustment of the bands in the 727 in this Duster. It shifts fine / kickdown applies as it should so I have just left well enough alone!

if its slipin pull the dipstick the oil should be burnt if not its sumtin else .

Had the same problem past summer ended up being the valve body.Like another post said they are easy to change.I would make sure cable is adjusted then go to valve body

The kickdown band was way out of adj.
i cant say thank you enough to ya'll for your help.
saved me a bunch of time and $$$$.
now some fresh type f and filter.
thank you!

That is why it skipped second completely sometimes. :D
It was my clue because that is what they do when the band is broken, but you said it slipped so we know the band was there, but not able to apply correctly.

Adjust both bands! Kickdown band: Tighten adjuster to 72 inlbs. Back off 2 1/2 turns, hold and lock.
Low and reverse band: Tighten adjuster to 72 inlbs. Back off 2 turns, hold and lock. Check if your specs are slightly different.

Pull front trans cover. Rotate converter to check for a drain plug. If yes, drain the converter.
Change the trans filter. Verify that there only one o-ring. Clean the oil pan and magnet.

Add ATF+4. Check fluid level in neutral.
