I have a 727 transmission question.

I have a 1974 Dart Sport that I have been working on. It hasnt been on the Road since 07.

When I move the console shifter to Park, I can bump it back to Reverse without pressing the shifter button. Isn't it supposed to lock into Park? If it is supposed to lock in to park, what is not engaging?

It needs to have the linkage under the car adjusted. It is not going into park far enough.

Quick test is disconnect the linkage and make sure the shifter itself is operating full range and smooth. The lock into park is done in the shifter.

I should add that the shifter wouldn't go all the into Park when I got it. I knew it wasnt all the way in P because it wouldnt start in P. When it was in P, it would be bumping the chrome on the center console. I thought about adjusting the console forward if I could, but then I found an adjustment on the linkage underneath

I went under the car an adjusted this from the linkage to give a bit more movement on moving it into Park..

It now goes into Park, (I believe, its on jacks but it now starts when in P) but it does not lock into place. I can bump back in Reverse because it doesnt lock into P.

Any ideas what I can do?

The shifter button in the shifter handle itself, - if screwed too far in, or not screwed in enuff can cause a limitation of the shifter movement.
It needs to be adjusted so the lever clears and engages the shifter gates correctly.
THe shifter will, when properly adjusted will still allow the shifter to move from neutral to drive without pressing the button.
Folks vacuuming inside the car can easily knock the shifter from N to D accidently, not good if engine running.
My cleanup guys would occasionally do it, causing damage to car and my work benches.
Good luck

Where are the gates that lock the shifter? Do I need to pull the center console to adjust?

Check out what 413 suggested, cuz all the shifter adjustments won't help if the linkage adjustments are wrong.
If it was working correctly before, - and you never turned the knob, it's likely okay.
My understanding is you had taken the knob off to install the console.

I have not taken the knob off or did anything else to to linkage other than what I said above. But I cannot say if any one else did before I owned it. I drove it bunch back in early 2000s but I dont remember if it was locking or not.

What is the best way to adjust the linkage? How do I know what I need to adjust? Or is it by feeling and seeing?

Sorry for the noob questions. Im working on my 1970 Mopar mechanic skills. lol

It's all good.
A coupla concerns.
You mention shifter goes forward till hits console, that's not right.
Were it me, with the car safe, chocked, etc, I'd pop that rod off the shift lever from the trans, and move that lever as far back as it'll go, that should engages the Park pawl, locking driveshaft.
Then go up and mess with the shifter, find out why it moves enuff to hit console when fully forward, as you suspected console may be out of place from previous owner.
It's possible to lift console enuff to work under, but with screws removed taking the console off just needs a small Allen key to loosen knob set-screw.
Count number of turns to remove knob, unscrew, remove knob , console should lift off, may be a wire for light.
Then you have clear access to shifter, - screw knob back on the number of turns you counted, then see why shifter doesn't engage Park gate.
With console off, it may work just fine, clean and lube moving parts.
You may find restricted movement cuz the knob needs to be screwed further on, or off, to get full motion.
Once you get full shifter motion, engaging the Park gate so shifter locks in P, leave shifter in P and go adjust the trans linkage with the lever still full back, so the adjuster pin fits directly into the lever hole, secure with clip/cotter pin.
Install console as nec to provide the motion needed.

Good luck

Found a video on an e-body that shows the plate that locks park in place.

I'm sure that would be similar on the A body.

I plan on tackling this on Saturday.

I'll post updates as I go!

Thanks for the assistance!

Back out that adjusting nut and slide the linkage, in the above picture, till the adjusting rod does not limit the travel of the shift linkage. Then move the lever on the trans all the way into park. Next move the shifter into park till it locks. Then tighten the bolt and check to see if everything is working correctly.

Maybe a first quick try would be loosen up the 4 screws that hold on the console and slide it forward, the metalwork underneath has screw slots that allow for about an inch forward backward adjustment. If your trans lever goes into park but your shifter is hitting the console gate then a 1/4 “ or so slide forward of the console should let the lever click forward enough to lock into the slot in the mechanism.
