727 Slipping - What is it?

So a friend contacted me yesterday about his 727. It was apparently rebuilt several years ago with some kind of shift kit. It sees mlld street and some drag strip use but has not accumulated a lot of miles. It has a factory automatic valve body.

He reported that yesterday it started slipping in all fwd gears, reverse works but feels like the cars brakes are applied and the fluid is brown and burnt smelling.

He is bringing it to me to go through...... any ideas on what it is?

On another note, i will belpicking up an unknow 68 date coded big block 727 core. If anyone needs one for a numbers resto let me know.

Piled up rear clutch

So what causes the feeling of brakes applied in reverse? Does the rear clutch freewheel or slip in reverse, and if the frictions have piled up it cant?

Isnt the rear clutch applied only in third? Could it be piled up direct (fwd?) Clutch?

Ah.... I see now, just opened my manual up. Rear clutch is applied in all fwd gears but not reverse. I agree, this is the most likely culprit. Thanks!
