Is it normal for a 727 transmission to leak fluid when put in a vertical position? I removed the transmission from the car last ? I removed and drain the pan and had been storing it horizontal but now I need to save space so I wanna store it vertically. When I tipped it up, I had some fluid come out the Filler hole so I removed the torque converter and drained it into a pan and got about a half quart out and I stood the trans on end and drained into a pan until it was done and I got about another court out. Doesn’t surprise me the fluid stayed up in the various passageways, but I thought that I got it all out. I put the torque converter back in seated fully, made a shim to hold it in and then put a piece of plywood across the mounting flange and bolted it on. Stood up in the corner yesterday and this morning there was a big puddle. What gives?

Is it coming from the torque converter seal?

Seems reasonable though I would change it before putting the trans back in a car.

I stored one like that once and sat it in a big round plastic trash can lid

Well sure. With no converter, there's nothing for the seal to ride against so fluid just runs out the front seal.
As stated, the converter is in it, fully seated. The trans was rebuilt shortly before removal and only had about 900 miles on it, with no problems while it was in the car. Been sitting for about three years. Wouldn't expect the seals to fail in that short of time while it was sitting in normal operating position.

Heck, i think it would pour right out the vent, especially if it was the front oil cover type vent, with or without the converter

Gotchya. Still, the vent is in the front pump. Facing it down will result in a big leak if there's fluid in it.
