727 Transmission

............they can b in any body .......higher hp cars, big boats, trucks.........any big block has a 727......kim..........

The only difference in 727's was bolt pattern between small block and big block , other wise they are the same. the 727 replaced the Torqueflite.

the first TorqueFlite was the c.1956 "A-488" .
it was cast iron ; had a real torque converter ; had the parking drum on its tail shaft extension housing ; had two oil pumps ( to facilitate push-starts ! ) ; and it was available behind the 392 Hemi , the 1958 350 / 361 "B" motors , and other motors whose sizes I cannot recall right now .

in 1960 , the first aluminum-cast T-Flite premiered : the TorqueFlite-6 ( later known as the A-904-G ) .
in 1962 , the cast aluminum 727 was released , replacing the cast iron 488 .

1966 & earlier T-Flites are different from their 1967 & later brothers .
1965 was the last year for cable-shift ; first year the push button-operation was cancelled ; the last year for the 2 oil pumps ; and the final year for the Ball & Trunion setup . 1965 is a one-year-only trans !

the A-727-A surfaced in c.1962 , and was placed-behind the 318 Poly motors , and later , the 318 HD , 340 and 360 ( the 273 and standard-duty 318's received the A-904-LA , as the 727 wouldn't fit in the trans tunnels of the pre-'67 "A" Bodies ! ) .

the gist of all of this ?
stick with a '67 through '78 trans . Earlier models are more-difficult to get parts for , and later models had dreaded lock-up torque converters ( phased-in c.1978 ) .

A small block ( "A" / "LA" series ) will have the bellhousing bolt pattern for 273 / 318
(LA ) / 340 / 360 motors .

A big block ( "B"/"RB" / 426 Hemi ) will have the bellhousing fit for these series of motors only .

Found an A-727-RG ? Those only work behind the Slant Six motors . Not too many of these around ...
