73 Dart Steering Rubbing sound/feel

Hey all, just recently got my Alternator replaced in my dart, which means its time for it to suddenly develop the next problem.

This time the steering system has suddenly started making a rubbing sound and the wheel feels the same way, just happened overnight, no clue so far what's causing it, seems to be lessened with speed.



Any ideas?

Check fluid level?

Power steering fluid? I can go give it a look real quick, gimme a few minutes.

Yup, she's empty it looks, is there a specific kind of oil for a car this old or will any power steering fluid work?

People put all sorts of things in there, including atf.


I would just use generic ps fluid.

I've always wondered how you know how much to put in there though, there's obviously the dipstick on the lid, but like how do I know without putting the lid on constantly?

Eye ball it to get close then check and go little by little. Having it be totally exact is not critical.

I suppose anything is better than bone dry. Gotta refill my engine oil too, looks like my oilpan might be alittle leaky.
