I am building a '74 Scamp and I will have a 550-600 hp 383 under the hood with 727 behind it. Obviously, the stocker (7 1/4) isn't going to cut it. What rear should I use? I have the following-

Truck 9"
GM A-body 8.5" 10-bolt

I would prefer Mopar, but D60s are not cheap and hard to find around here.

A 8 3/4 A-body rear is what you need,also can use a B-body rear(a little wider,but will work)GM?Unless a 12 bolt,you,d be wasting time.My 2 pesos

P.S If your stuck for 1,you could use a ford 9 inch.

The GM 8.5" 10-bolt is just as strong as the 12-bolt and more plentiful, I just don't want to use it as I have plans for it already.

Like I said, I have plans for the 10-bolt and I want to keep it Mopar. Will the 8 3\4 live behind that much power with the possible addition of 200 hp worth of nitrous? I know Ford and GM rears, but I don't know jack about mopars! This was my question, what would live behind 550-600 hp from the mopar offerings and what would be a simple\cheap build and easy to find. I really don't want to narrow it if I don't have to. I am doing ladder bars, tubs and a 10-point cage with 10-inch slicks. 15x10 wheels with 5" backspacing. The car is in the weeds so getting out there and measuring it is not easy right now.

Lets see, the 8 3/4 came standard behind Max Wedge, Hemi super stock automatic cars and almost every high performance application Mopar was making, I think it could be made to live behind your set-up. Heck, even the early 8 3/4's with the keywayed drums came behind Hemi cars. Yea, a Dana would be nice, but the 8 3/4 will do just fine. Good luck with your project, Geof

Footbraking it may do ok, transrake, no chance, it'll blow up.

Starting from scratch, don't have an 8.75 or Dana, get a Dana.

I went dana for this reason. I wanted the added peice of mind. I found my Dana 60 truck rear end for 60 bucks. With a power lock and the right gears I wanted. There out there. Maybe not at that price but there out there. Most likely your donor will be a truck. I hunted till I found one with the gears and posi less money to fork out later. Just remember to factor in cost. If your worried that the 8 3/4 wont hold up there is no way a chebby 10 bolt will.
