Would my 70 340 Duster have come from the factory with a 741 Rear? According to the fender tag it came with a Heavy Duty 3.91 rear. Isn't the 741 the weakest of the 3? I haven't checked to make sure the 3.91's still exist but from what I felt when I drove the car they or something close are in there now. I just lifted the car last night to check the ratio the old school way but didn't finish. I will later.

even if the 741 is the weakest of the three 8 3/4 axles, it is still stronger then your 7 1/4 or 8 1/4

and that is why it would be considered a heavy duty rear end

Nothing wrong with a 741. They will still take a LOT of torque !!

I have had 4 340 dusters and they all had factory 741s never had any trouble

All my HP Original "A" bodies, 67 273 4 speed Barracuda 68 318 Barracuda, 71 340 4 speed Duster, had 741 centers also. Not sure of the 68 383 Barracuda, pretty sure that was swapped out before I got it.

Thanks for the info guys.....When I read articles about Mopar 8 3/4 rears and they say the 741 is the weaker of the 3 it made me a little nervous. I'm sure it will be strong enough for my driver....A nice burnout once in a while but basically a stock driver at this point.

My untouched 68 GTS 383 was born with a 741.

I've got 400k on the 67 741 cruised at 100 mph all day long out west, came behind a 4 speed 273 Commando and had a hard life for the first 50k. Still runs like new, untouched.

My 67 Barracuda 383 auto had the 741 case from new. Still lives in the rear of that same car,,,many years of some hard use. I am sure your ok :)

I have a 70 duster 340 car it has a 741 case with 391 posi unit.I know this is original with the
car.

God those articles are so screwed up.

I'd love to hear how the 741 is weaker. Rarely, as I've never seen or heard, if ever, are the pinion bearings or shaft the weak point in any 8.75 rear.

The 742 and 489 pinions have a stress riser manufactured right into the pinion... guess where ALL my 8.75's broke when a pinion failed... nothing to do with pinion shaft diameter or bearings. LOL

All share the same crappy ring gear that deflects and loses teeth.
