7.25 cover is triagulated toward the top while the 8.25 is more of an oval
I usually count the bolts when they're all grimey it's sometimes hard to make out the shape.

7 1/4 looks like a toy
8 1/4 looks "normal"
you can also measure the axle tube (inside with of the U-bolts) 7 1/4 is only 2 1/2" wide

Some impressive stallagtites under there! 7 1/4's are easy to ID.....they're the ones with bad spiders and side gears in them!

i could always identify the 7 1/4 rear by all the schrapnel hanging out of it from thrashing with even a stock 318.lol
