I am about to buy an 8 1/4 diff but it has no drums on it. It has good brake plates on it,but will the drums off my 7 .25 fit the 8 1/4 ? Are they the same? If different will the plates off the 7.25 fit the 8 1/4 ?

The drums won't fit J-G. They say that the backing plates can be made to fit but I wouldn't bother as there is drilling involved. The better route would be to find a junker of any size car that has a 8 1/4 or 8 3/4. Take the entire brake system off of it and use it on your 8 1/4. The key to the whole setup is the backing plates. You must use the backing plates that match the drums and other brake parts. You can get these off of any size car ie: polara, cuda, fury.
Just use the whole setup. If you need to buy new drums then it is just a matter of ordering them for the type of car you took the setup off of.

Beside the bolt circle issue and 8.25 will have backing plates and be set up for 10" x 2.5" drums and the \6 Dart will likely have 9" x 1.75" brakes.

Unless, of course, the Dart has front disks then the rear brakes drums should fit.

If your 7 1/4 is a big bolt and has the 10" brakes they will fit. I have a big bolt 7 1/4 in a Scamp and the backing plates and drums are identical to the backing plates and drums off of an 8 1/4 I have in my Cordoba. The backing plates on my 7 1/4 even have the fifth (bottom) hole even though they are not used on the 7 1/4.

FYI and food for thought, I used Cordoba 11 inch gear on my 8-1/4.
