Help ....lol, Picked up a 741 case with a 489 pumpkin, the axles are 5 on 4, can I take the axles out of the 8 1/4 rear that is on the car. The one in the car must be from a police unit, the rims have the slots and it has the 10 X2.5 brake pads, would like to be able to use these axles ...any advise would be great .... -35 below today, do not want to go out and rip it apart but really want to know. Later

They do not interchange, 8 1/4 are c-clip axles. 8 3/4 are not.

Thought so, but was just hoping, I guess I will have to stick with a 8 3/4 Rear, correct me if I am wrong, any axle from a 741.742.489 suregrip will work as long as the lenght matches. Does any one know the axle lenght on a 69 dart. Also, I should be able to take the 10 X 2.5 brake drum assemblies off the 8 1/4 and use them with the sure grip assembley, this would give me the 4.5 bolt pattern...right. Thanks guys

no, you'll need axles made for the larger drums to work.

the distance from back of the axle flange to the housing flange is not right for the 2.5 drums.

I know already that I will have to get new axles, what I was asking was if I could use the brake assembles and have axles made to work with them and the suregrip. I like the 10 X 2.5 brake drum set-up, it is practically new.

You can get Moser axels for A-body 8 3/4 housing, just let them know your using 10x 2 1/2 inch brakes.Everything from the 8 1/4 will bolt up to the A-body rear.Once you have the axels made, you can interchange centers(741,742,489)just swap u-joints for diff, size yokes.:-D

Thanks, that spelled it out, Reading up, when I order the moser axles, other then telling them the brake set-up and lenght ( still hoping someone can confirm the lenght of the axles to be safe ) all I would also need would be having the green bearings pressed on and they should basically just slide right in after that.

Thanks all, have the back figured out, now the front disc's. Will post under diff. heading. Again, thanks guys ...great site for novice and on.
