I was wondering if anyone else has noticed the trend of people painting their center sections in 8 3/4 rearends cast color or leaving them bare. All the ones I’ve seen on original survivor cars and from talking to other mopar guys that worked on assembly lines back then say that all the center sections where painted black from the factory.

I think they are supposed to be bare cast iron, with whatever inspection marks. Every one I have ever pulled from an original housing was rusty with no paint other than inspection marks. Axle housings were hastily painted gloss black or semi gloss black.

Just as long as they don't paint 'em yellow....or orange, or some other high impact low iq colors. :eek: Anything to keep from rusting is ok

I always paint it gloss or satin black. When I was last asked about this very thing, I responded with DILLIGAF? My car my way.

Here's the last one I did - I do them cast iron.

This is a 1970 model year 489 case. After removing it, I soaked it for a couple hours in Evaporust.

You can see the line left from the fluid level where the rust was removed & that it also left what remained of the paint daubs intact;

Here are some pics with original markings on the carrier and the housing. There is black paint on both. I think the black paint was a low grade cheap paint and wears off except where the markings are painted over the black.

The factory was not consistent over the years. You can do a cast iron color or a black and no one can correct you.
